Literature is defined as a collection of any text work of art that can be classified as prose, fiction, non-fiction, drama, and poetry.  Though literature can be deliver oral aside from text, another example for literature may be a variety of genre such as epics, legends, myths, ballads, and other forms of folklore and poetry. Different countries all over the world have various forms of literature that they have written and accumulated over time that reflect their beliefs and history. For some, the word “literature” may come to mean as individual work of prominent authors such as Charles Dickens and Shakespeare.

One of the oldest forms of literature known to man is the Epic of Gilgamesh. Thought to be composed in around 1900 BC, this epic portrays a story of heroism, friendship, death, and the journey towards eternal salvation. Aside from this, various forms of literature were created based on the historical period the author or writer was in. The epics of Homer dating back from the middle Iron ages were created by the author of classic Western literature who created famous works such as the Lliad and Odyssey. He was also known to be the greatest Greek Ancient poet. The Odyssey is studied throughout the world as an epic poem about the wanderings of a Greek hero named Odysseus following his victory over the Trojan War. The Lliad, on the other hand, is an epic poem which foretells the battle between King Agamemnon and Achilles during the Trojan War. These epics by Homer were so very renowned worldwide that it was made into a couple of movies during the 20th and 21st century.

Perhaps another of the most popular literatures of all time is the love story of Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare. A tragedy written in the early days of William’s life, this story has been adapted numerous times for films, stage, and musical and opera.

Another iconic character in English literature is Charles Dickens. Many of Dicken’s novels were themed on social reform. Among his prominent literary works include Oliver Twist, which mirrors the London underworld, and David Copperfield, where the author used his own personal work experience from a factory.

One of the most prominent poets during the Victorian era is Elizabeth Barret Browning. Among her famous poems include Sonnets from the Portugese and Aurora Leigh. Most of her work focuses on a spiritual theme and in her work. And her work “The Cry of the Children” which condemned child labour, brought about child labour reforms during her lifetime.

Last but not the least of the many poets and literary figures known throughout the world is Edgar Allan Poe. Known to be an American author, critic, and poet, his tales of short stories have a theme of mystery and macabre. He was the first to create a detective fiction genre. A few of the several scariest stories he wrote include The Masque of Red Death, The Cask of Amontillado, and The Raven.

These are just a few of the well-known literature and literary authors of all time that made a significant mark on world literature and that will still be passed on for generations to come.
